Overbuilding Is Better--Build 'em To Last!

May 25, 2011
Let's zero in on pedestrian gates for a moment.  Find the weakest link in your build, then overbuild it to turn it into a strong link!

The hinge post for a pedestrian gate has been a challenge.  Many still haven't mastered it.  Well here's how you do it!  Overbuild the weak link into a strong link, hurray!!

Look at this pedestrian gate hinge post below.  It's a 4"x6" not a 4"x4", and note it's position.  What's that shiny strip at the bottom in the middle that goes into the concrete?  Aaah, it's called a steel reinforcement strap positioned for strength and it's nestled in a custom routed channel so as not to protrude!  And by the way, that goes way down into the concrete with the post!  And there's another on the front side of that post too!  How deep is that post?  MORE than deep enough--which makes positively certain that it ain't bending or breaking any decade soon.  Last obvious detail, er should be obvious.  Wood posts don't rot at the base if they have proper elevated concrete foundations just like this one does, right?  NO soil and no plants in contact with the wood, there's the answer!  Now just cover that post with a board and it's pretty and nobody will suspect just how well you've built it!  Sure it's more work but aren't your customers worth it?  Mine are!  Nothing is too good for my customers!

And that's what a satisfying build is all about!

Okay.  Full view front and back.

More than enough heavy duty hinges fastened with SPAX brand (Manufactured in either Germany or the U.S. to exact spec.:  heavy duty hardened steel (grade 5), proprietary design, etc.) lag bolts gives you total confidence that this gate was overbuilt to last!  Thank God Home Depot started carrying these, they're the best!  That's all I'll use from now on!

Latch post dropped amply deep with elevated foundation as well.  Attached to the building?  Hell no!  Most buildings are not plumb on the outside surface, and what if there's no stud there?  Don't even think butterfly which will eventually stress and crack the stucco!  Get real, do it right!

The gate frame is another story.  Another design I developed, simple, strong and nice!

Nothing is too good for my customers!  So who are you going to let build your project?
